NEW HAMPTON, New Hampshire — About 40 people assisted in rescuing a hiker who injured his leg while hiking in steep terrain on a trail in North Chatham, New Hampshire.

New Hampshire's Fish and Game Department says 63-year-old Peter Lacoste of Rochester was on the Basin Pond Trail with his family when he slipped on a rock about a mile from a campground about 4 p.m. Thursday. He was unable to walk, and a family member hiked out to the campground to call for assistance.

Rescuers from Maine and New Hampshire mountain teams and fire departments gave their time help four conservation officers carry Lacoste a mile to an ambulance Thursday night.
