Scuba diver dies after rescue in San Diego's Mission Bay channel

SAN DIEGO — San Diego authorities say a scuba diver rescued from Mission Bay channel later died at a hospital.

U-T San Diego reports ( lifeguards received a call for help Wednesday evening from a boat captain, who said the diver was seen struggling shortly after jumping into the water.

The man and a partner were diving for lobster.

Fire-Rescue Capt. Joe Amador says the man's friend tried unsuccessfully to keep his partner afloat as lifeguards responded.

Amador says the man was unresponsive and did not have a pulse when he was pulled into a lifeguard boat. He had been under water for about four to six minutes.

Lifeguards and paramedics performed CPR, but the man died at UC San Diego Medical Center less than an hour later.

Lobster season in Southern California opened on Saturday.
