NORFOLK, Virginia — U.S. Fleet Forces Command has a new commander.

Adm. Phil Davidson assumed command on Friday after being promoted to admiral.

The ceremony was officiated by teleconference by Adm. Bill Gortney, who was Davidson's predecessor. Gortney is the commander of U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Davidson most recently served as the commander of the Navy's Sixth Fleet, which is based in Italy. Davidson was originally slated to take over Fleet Forces in November, but his replacement had not been confirmed by the Senate.

Fleet Forces Command oversees the Atlantic fleet, and is responsible for training and providing forces to combatant commanders around the world.
