WASHINGTON — Police say a woman and two boys have been shot at an apartment in southeast Washington following a confrontation between the two boys.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier told reporters that a 17-year-old boy was in a dispute with his 12-year-old neighbor when he went to the younger boy's apartment with a gun on Tuesday afternoon. Lanier says shots were fired and both boys were wounded, along with the 12-year-old's mother.

Lanier says all three were hospitalized and the mother's wounds were the most serious.

Like many U.S. cities, the District of Columbia has seen an increase in homicides and nonfatal shootings. There have been 95 homicides so far this year, a 31 percent increase over this point in 2014.
