GREENVILLE, Mississippi — Greenville Mayor John Cox says he will not run for re-election in November.
Cox tells the Delta Democrat-Times (http://bit.ly/1w8ja4w ) his decision not to run for a second term came after lengthy deliberations, principally with family members.
Cox won a special election in October 2012, a month after his predecessor, Chuck Jordan, stepped down after receiving a diagnosis of advanced-stage pancreatic cancer. Jordan died the next month.
The 67-year-old Cox underwent open-heart surgery in 2003 to correct a heart murmur. He says while his health is good, he would be 71 at the end of a second term and "four more years is just more than I think I can handle at this point."
His current term ends Jan. 1, 2016.
