COLUMBIA, South Carolina — Investigators say they connected a gun taken from a man who fired on police last summer to the killing of a Columbia man near his home three days earlier.

Columbia Police have charged 45-year-old Ibin Patterson with murder in the July 28 killing of 32-year-old Timothy Gentry. It was not immediately known if Patterson had an attorney.

Police Chief Skip Holbrook said Thursday that the break in the case came when the State Law Enforcement Division tested a gun Patterson used when he robbed a woman and fired on officers on July 31.

Holbrook says the bullets fired at police matched the bullet that killed Gentry.

The police chief says investigators haven't determined a motive for killing Gentry, who worked with children and did charity work overseas.
