SOUTH BEND, Indiana — The mayor of South Bend is heading back to City Hall after a seven-month military deployment to Afghanistan.

The return of Mayor Pete Buttigieg (BOO'-tah-juhj) to the mayor's office on Monday comes 11 days after his arrival back in the city for the first time since late February.

The 32-year-old Democrat is a lieutenant in the Navy Reserve and served during his deployment as an intelligence officer, with work trying to block narcotics trade money from reaching insurgents.

Buttigieg says he hopes he'll be a better mayor after his time as a junior officer whose duties included sometimes serving as a driver and armed escort and taking turns cleaning toilets.

Buttigieg joined the Navy Reserve in 2009 and was elected South Bend's mayor in 2011.
