HAYWARD, California — An Oakland man who shot and wounded a 16-year-old boy for beating up his son has been sentenced to 35 years to life in state prison.

Forty-nine-year-old Darren Andre Cleveland was sentenced Thursday for premeditated attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and other crimes.

Authorities say the 16-year-old had been expelled from school for attacking Cleveland's 15-year-old son last year.

Prosecutors say Cleveland spent several weeks tracking down the boy, spotted him in San Leandro and hit him with a baseball bat.

Authorities say when the boy fled, Cleveland drove after him and fired at least seven shots, hitting him in the shoulder.
