ALBANY, New York — A 42-year-old upstate New York man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for murdering another man during a burglary.
Oscar Valcarcel was found guilty in September of first-degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Caleb Capen last December.
Capen was beaten and strangled at knifepoint inside his Albany apartment. His body was found by police responding to a report of a broken window.
Valcarcel is a repeat felon with prior convictions for robbery, forgery and drug offenses. Albany County Judge Roger McDonough called Valcarcel's actions "vicious and barbaric" before imposing the sentence on Thursday.
