PHILADELPHIA — A man has been sentenced to 18 to 36 years in prison in the strangulation death of a woman in north Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Inquirer (http://bit.ly/1OEf4tW ) reports that 43-year-old Larry Rodriguez was sentenced Tuesday in the June 2012 death of 41-year-old Sonya Lewis. A jury in October convicted him of third-degree murder.

The nine-year Army veteran said he has post-traumatic stress disorder related to his military service, and Judge Rose Marie DeFino-Natasi said she believed him.

But she said it was clear that he knew he became violent when using alcohol and crack cocaine, and he continued to use the drug.

Assistant District Attorney Alisa Shver said the defendant "has a problem with women and a problem with being disrespected."

Defense attorney Joseph Valvo said an appeal is planned.
