ATLANTA — A severe weather system has crossed north Georgia, hitting some areas with hail and high winds that toppled trees.

The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings Monday afternoon throughout much of the metro Atlanta area and said the threat gradually moved east, leaving a trail of downed trees and power lines behind.

A tornado watch set to expire at 8 p.m. stretches eastward from metro Atlanta, covering the Gainesville, Athens and Toccoa areas. Georgia Power's online outage map showed 2,760 customers without service around 4:30 p.m.

Forecasters are also warning of severe thunderstorms and rain in parts of north Georgia. Forecasters say some areas could see hail and winds of up to 60 mph.
