WESTLAKE VILLAGE, California — Friends and family have gathered to mourn a Ventura County sheriff's deputy who was killed by an alleged hit-and-run driver.
A flag-covered casket carried the body of Sgt. Eugene Kostiuchenko into a church in Westlake Village for his funeral on Tuesday.
The Ventura County Star (http://bit.ly/1y0JtuQ ) says the deputy's parents from his native Ukraine and California Attorney General Kamala Harris attended.
The 41-year-old father of two was struck by a car last week in Camarillo as he walked back to his patrol car near a freeway onramp after stopping another motorist.
Twenty-five-year-old Kevin Hogrefe of Camarillo has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and felony hit-and-run. Hogrefe has told the Ventura County star he had seven beers in a bar before the accident.
