PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — A new building with vaults to house cremation urns has opened at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee, state officials and veterans' services organizations attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Columbarium No. 3 at the cemetery in Exeter on Monday.
Chafee said the celebration marked a continuation of the state's efforts to serve veterans and their families.
The new columbarium contains 2,160 niches. It is the third columbarium for veterans at the cemetery. A $658,000 federal grant paid for the construction.
