LAKE IN THE HILLS, Illinois — The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting a minor earthquake occurred northwest of Chicago

The federal agency reports the tremor, which occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday, was centered near Lake in the Hills and measured 2.9 on the Richter scale.

The USGS reports residents in Crystal Lake, Huntley, Woodstock and Elgin felt the quake. Authorities are saying so far, no injuries or damage has been reported.

Officials of the U.S. Geological Survey say most earthquakes with a magnitude less than 3.0 on the Richter scale usually don't cause damage.
