SANDY, Utah — An elderly man in Sandy was fatally struck by a car while chasing his dog.

Authorities say the 90-year-old was hit Friday around 7:45 p.m. in the area of 10600 South near 300 East.

According to police, the man had been pursuing his dog and was not in a crosswalk when he was hit by an SUV.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The dog was not injured.

Lt. Jon Arnold says the driver of the SUV, a man in his 30s, stayed at the scene.

Arnold says preliminary evidence indicates the driver was not at fault but the investigation remains ongoing.

The man's name was not immediately released.
