THIBODAUX, Louisiana — By replacing insurance plans for retirees, officials say the Lafourche Parish School District could save more than $300,000 each year.

The Daily Comet reports (http://bit.ly/1ezCKE1) the Lafourche Parish School Board Insurance Committee approved a measure July 22 that would enroll the district in the Employer Waiver Group Program for Medicare eligible drug subsidies.

The full board will vote on the measure at its Aug. 5 meeting.

The district currently uses the federal Retiree Drug Subsidy program, which reimburses the school district for a portion of the costs associated with prescription drug benefits under Medicare Part B.

District Business Manager Don Gaudet says the Employer Group Waiver Plan is a similar program that's calculated differently but would give the school district a greater rebate.
