RICHMOND, Virginia — A Petersburg man awaiting sentencing in a murder-for-hire case has died in jail.

Riverside Regional Jail superintendent Jeffery Newton tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch ( ) that Shannon Crane was found unresponsive in his cell on Monday. He says the medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.

The cell is in the jail's medical unit. Newton says he couldn't provide details of Crane's medical treatment because of privacy restrictions.

Crane had pleaded guilty in June 2014 to solicitation to commit capital murder. He was scheduled to be sentenced Thursday in Petersburg Circuit Court.

Crane was charged with offering an undercover officer $1,000 each to kill his girlfriend's husband and his niece's boyfriend.
