DENVER — The namesake statue of a Denver church has been destroyed by vandals for at least the fourth time in the past two years.

Vandals broke off the head and hands of the St. Francis statue on Sunday night at St. Francis of Assisi Polish National Catholic Church. Surveillance video shows a man smashing the statue's face with a hammer before giving his partner a high-five.

Church spokeswoman Lisa Shubel told The Denver Post (http://dpo.st/1yRHdF2) that the pair broke a window to get inside the church and ransacked its kitchen. However they left quickly, apparently scared off by the alarm system installed after the previous crimes.

The latest attack came just before the start of Lent and the church's annual blessing of the animals.
