PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — Rhode Island health officials say residents should avoid recreational activities at a Providence pond where an algae bloom has formed.
The state Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Management announced a health advisory for the Mashapaug Pond because of a blue-green algae bloom.
Officials say residents should avoid boating, swimming, fishing and other recreational activities. People should also not drink the water or allow their pets to swim in it.
Officials say the recreational advisory will likely remain in effect through the end of the year.
Common side effects from contact with algae blooms are skin rashes and irritation of the nose, eyes, and throat.
