AUGUSTA, Maine — U.S. Sen. Angus King is preparing for a trip to Canada with Secretary of State John Kerry.

The independent senator will travel to Iqaluit (ee-KA-lew-it), Canada on Friday to attend this year's Artic Council Ministerial Meeting, where the U.S. will assume the chairmanship of the Arctic Council for the next two years.

King, who's a founding member of the Senate Arctic Caucus, says this is an opportunity for the U.S. to strengthen relationships that could "define the future of the region for decades to come."

King visited the Arctic last year and has been calling for increased U.S. leadership and interests in the region.
