MADRID — Real Madrid defender Marcelo has signed an extension to his contract, tying the Brazil international to the club for another five seasons.
The club says in a statement Friday that the 27-year-old left back has agreed to stay at Madrid until June 2020.
Marcelo joined Madrid from Fluminense in Jan. 2007 and has earned the Bernabeu's respect as its first-choice attacking defender in the style of his predecessor in the role, Roberto Carlos.
Marcelo helped Madrid win three league titles and also played an important part in clinching the club's 10th Champions League title by scoring a goal against crosstown rival Atletico Madrid during its 4-1 win in the 2014 final.
A back injury prevented Marcelo from participating in Brazil's Copa America campaign.
