RICHMOND, Virginia — Richmond police say a woman has died from injuries suffered in a wreck involving a driver who was fleeing officers.

Police tell multiple media outlets that 46-year-old Mary E. Smith of North Chesterfield died Wednesday night at a local hospital.

Police say a sport utility vehicle driven by 25-year-old Ikieem Kilpatrick of Richmond ran a red light and collided with Smith's car on Tuesday during a police chase.

Police say the chase began when the SUV was pulled over for reckless driving. Kilpatrick is accused of driving away at a high rate of speed as an officer approached the SUV.

Kilpatrick was charged with felony hit-and-run driving, reckless driving, operating a vehicle with a suspended license and several firearms-related offenses.
