FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, New Jersey — An attempt to catch shoplifting suspects ended in a 5-vehicle crash in Freehold Township.

It started when security at the township's Wal-Mart spotted two men stealing televisions on Thursday night.

Police Lt. Lawrence Loos tells the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/1EAoFOO ) the suspects threatened to fight security and brandished pepper spray before driving off in a rental car.

Loos says the suspects' car, three other vehicles and a police cruiser crashed at the intersection of Route 537 and Route 33.

The two suspects fled on foot.

Four people were taken to a hospital for evaluation.
