CARSON CITY, Nevada — Carson City has rung in Nevada's 151st birthday with its annual parade and a slate of other special events.

Gov. Brian Sandoval was scheduled to participate in a run/walk through the historic district on Saturday morning. He also opened up the governor's mansion to public tours in the afternoon.

Republican Sen. Dean Heller took over hosting duties at the annual chili feed. And Democratic Senate candidate Catherine Cortez Masto and Republican Senate candidate Rep. Joe Heck participated in the parade.

Public schools and many public offices closed Friday to observe the holiday, although Nevada formally marks its birthday on Oct. 31.
