MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — West Virginia University's Mountaineer mascot is getting some financial help from a Charleston couple.

Steve and Karen Farmer have established a $125,000 endowment through the WVU Alumni Association to support the mascot's outreach efforts. The Stephen and Karen Farmer Mountaineer Mascot Fund will provide financial help for lab fees, books, equipment and other expenses that the mascot's scholarship/stipend doesn't cover.

The university says in a news release that the mascot makes more than 300 appearances in a typical school year.

Karen Farmer says the release that the couple hopes the endowment will provide more opportunities for the mascot to attend events showcasing the university.
