SUNDERLAND, England — Manchester City ended a six-year wait for a Premier League win at Sunderland with an impressive 4-1 victory on Wednesday for the defending champions.

The visitors had lost on their last four visits to the Stadium of Light and hadn't won since a 3-0 victory in August 2008. But two goals from Sergio Aguero and strikes from Pablo Zabaleta and Stevan Jovetic put Wednesday's game well beyond Sunderland's reach.

"The team is coming again in their performances and all the players are having more trust in what we are doing, but we must continue the same way," City manager Manuel Pellegrini said.

City's dismal record on Wearside had looked like extending further after the hosts capitalized on a bright start.

Sunderland went ahead in the 19th when Zabaleta's attempted clearance deflected off Connor Wickham and into the net.

However that lead was shortlived with Aguero leveling two minutes later. He rolled the ball through defender Sebastian Coates' legs before unleashing a vicious shot past goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, for his 13th goal of the season.

City went ahead in the 39th when Aguero laid the ball off for strike partner Jovetic to score, after Yaya Toure had initially picked out the Argentina striker inside the area.

Zabaleta added a third in the 55th when he lifted the ball over Pantilimon after being picked out by Samir Nasri.

Aguero hit the fourth in the 71st when he met James Milner's right-wing cross for his 30th goal in his last 33 league appearances.

"Sergio is only 26 and he can improve every day. At the moment we are seeing very high performances from him. Not only is he scoring but he's playing well as well," Pellegrini added.

That win keeps City within touching distance of league leader Chelsea, which beat Tottenham 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho's side remains unbeaten this season, six points clear of City.
