MORGANTON, North Carolina — Authorities in Burke County are looking into the cause of a barn fire that killed four horses.

The Charlotte Observer reports (http://bit.ly/1yLn9nW ) Icard Township Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Jeff Icard said firefighters found the structure engulfed in flames when they arrived Friday afternoon. Icard said by the time firefighters reached the barn, the roof had already collapsed and there was nothing they could do for the horses.

The barn near Connelly Springs had farm equipment stored inside, along with a large quantity of hay. The four horses were in stalls.

Icard said the challenge for the fire departments was water supply. Tankers shuttled in water from up to a half-mile away.

The Burke County Fire Marshal is investigating the fire.
