SYRACUSE, New York — A man is dead and a woman has been hospitalized after a fire broke out at a Syracuse apartment complex.

City fire officials say the blaze ignited at about 11: 45 p.m. Wednesday. It took firefighters about 15 to 20 minutes to beat back the flames at the Nob Hill Apartment Complex.

Fire Lt. John Cussen tells the Post-Standard that a 72-year-old man died in the fire and a 64-year-old woman has been taken to the burn center at Upstate University Hospital.

The fire was contained to one apartment, but some units suffered water and smoke damage. All residents were allowed back inside Thursday morning.

Authorities haven't released the names of the victims.

Officials say careless smoking caused the fire.
