RICHMOND, Virginia — Virginia is changing the way many transportation projects are chosen and funded.

Media outlets report that the Commonwealth Transportation Board approved a prioritization program on Wednesday that establishes a new scoring system for projects.

Projects will be evaluated by Virginia Department of Transportation staff according to a weighted system based on six criteria. The criteria are accessibility, congestion management, economic development, environmental quality, safety and land use. The board then will select which projects to fund.

The program will be used to evaluate and fund projects that are part of a regional network or a corridor of statewide significance.

The current six-year plan includes about $1 billion for such projects.
