ALBANY, Oregon — One person died in a fire at an Albany apartment building and others might have been harmed if not for the efforts of a motorist.
The Albany Fire Department says the blaze was reported Wednesday morning and the estimated loss is $300,000.
A witness, Robert Adam, told the Albany Democrat-Herald (http://is.gd/6Ln87X ) he was traveling home when he saw the flames. He stopped his car in the middle of the street and started banging on doors and windows.
Adam says some residents were upset with him until he told them the building was on fire.
He then lifted himself to the second floor, where the fire was more intense. He tried to kick in a door before grabbing a chair and breaking a window.
Another truck stopped in the meantime and brought a ladder to the second floor.
An occupant was able to get out through the window.
