ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — New Mexico is already getting a white Christmas.

A storm system that slammed California earlier this week arrived in New Mexico by Saturday evening, bringing snow and rain to western and central parts of the state.

The National Weather Service says parts of Albuquerque and Santa Fe received between 1 and 3 inches of snow overnight.

Forecasters say residual snow showers and strong wind gusts are expected Sunday in northern New Mexico.

Meteorologist Jason Frazier says both Albuquerque and Santa Fe will reach high temperatures in the mid-40s but will likely feel colder because of a strong wind chill.

New Mexico Department of Transportation crews have been out plowing and salting roads.

But motorists are advised to drive with caution as many roads are icy.
