COLUMBUS, Ohio — More than 3,000 Ohio high school students are participating in a mock-trial competition taking place in 25 counties around the state.
More than 1,000 legal professionals were volunteering as judges, competition coordinators and legal advisers for the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education's Mock Trial Competition on Friday.
This year's trial will focus on a civil lawsuit filed by a fictitious juvenile facility inmate who claimed guards used excessive force to break up a cafeteria fight and then failed to properly care for his resulting injury.
Each team consists of 11 members who prepare both plaintiff and defense cases. Each team will compete in two trials against other teams.
Teams can advance from the district competition to regionals on Feb. 20.
