SAVANNAH, Georgia — A Savannah police officer has been fired after he shot and wounded an unarmed man last year while responding to reports of gunshots outside a nightclub.
The Savannah Morning New reports (http://bit.ly/1vWrPYJ ) Savannah-Chatham County police notified officer Bobby Waiters of his suspension pending dismissal in July. Savannah's city manager denied Waiters' appeal of his termination Aug. 18.
Waiters, who joined the department in 2005, had been on administrative leave since he shot Timothy Maurice Williams on April 10, 2013. An internal affairs investigation found Williams and his brother were fleeing gunshots fired outside a nightclub when they climbed a fence into a home's backyard. Investigators found Williams did not pose an "immediate threat" to the officer, who shot him in violation of police procedures governing the use of deadly force.
