SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police say a suspect in a vehicle theft who exchanged gunfire with an officer has died after being shot.

The San Antonio Express-News reports (http://bit.ly/1llR5az ) officers responded Sunday afternoon to a report of a vehicle theft in progress.

Police said in a statement that the suspect ran away on foot and an officer pursued him. The statement says the suspect stopped, pulled a gun and fired multiple shots at the officer, who returned fire, hitting the suspect several times.

The officer was not hit.

Police say the suspect was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital, where he died. He was not immediately identified.

The officer is on administrative leave pending an investigation.
