OAKLAND, California — The West Oakland BART Station was closed for several hours after a man shot and wounded himself on a train platform.
Bay Area Rapid Transit officials say BART police approached a man smoking on the platform Tuesday night and asked him to put out the cigarette.
Officials say the man gave officers false names and then threatened to jump in front of an oncoming train.
BART Deputy Police Chief Jeff Jennings says when the man reached for his waistband, officers hit him with a stun gun.
Jennings says the man managed to retrieve a handgun from his waistband and shot himself in the abdomen.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1KqOFTH ) the man, who was not identified, was hospitalized in critical condition.
The station was shut down during an investigation and reopened late Tuesday.
