BANNING, California — The death of an inmate at a Riverside County jail is being investigated as a homicide.

The Sheriff's Department says deputies responded to a trouble call Tuesday afternoon at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

In a cell, they found an inmate who'd received traumatic injuries. He didn't respond to life-saving measures and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His name and the reason he was in jail haven't been released.

No arrests have been made but the investigation continues.
