Alan James Read, age 85, of Indianapolis, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Rosegate Village in Indianapolis. He was born on February 20, 1931, in Geneva, Illinois, as the son of Arthur and Edith (Petersen) Read. He graduated from Batavia High School in 1949. He served in the Marines from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. Alan married Donna (Schiedler) on November 18, 1950, in Batavia, Illinois.

He worked for Bostonian Shoes as the outlet director for 34 years before retiring in 1988. He also became co-owner with his wife of KOA Campgrounds for 10 years. Mr. Read was a member of Cumberland Christian Church. He enjoyed traveling, camping and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alan is survived by his wife, Donna Read of Indianapolis; children, Marcia Wood of Indianapolis, Thomas Read of Ellington, Connecticut, Laura (Scott) Clark of Santee, South Carolina, Sandra (Jonathan) Myers of Tonganoxie, Kansas, and Linda Read of North Aurora, Illinois; sister, Lois Laidig, of Ohio; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Edith (Petersen) Read; sister, Ruth Bentson; and brother, Warren Read.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 14, 2016, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Cumberland Christian Church, 39 N. Starter St, Indianapolis. A funeral service will be take place immediately following the visitation at 11 a.m. Pastor Tom Scott will be officiating. A private family burial will take place at Curry’s Chapel Cemetery.
