GREENFIELD — James Whitcomb Riley’s poem, “The King,” might be the theme of this year’s festival honoring the Hoosier Poet, but Sunday night, the talk was all about the queen.
When the emcee announced Greenfield-Central High School junior Danielle Dudley as the winner of the 2013 Riley Festival Queen Contest, her mother burst into tears.
As did the new queen’s aunt, her grandmother and both sisters.
“It’s a Dudley thing,” joked Dudley’s sister, Brittany Dudley, 19. “We’re all criers.”
But Dudley was all smiles on stage as she accepted congratulations and hugs from her fellow contestants. She was one of 16 who vied for the title.
A first-time competitor, the 17-year-old Greenfield-Central High School junior had just hoped to make the Top 10.
“I guess I got that,” she joked, donning her sparkly new crown.
