NEW PALESTINE — Yorktown spent Saturday mostly dominating the Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet, winning eight of 12 events and was seemingly destined for its third straight conference crown.

But, the Tigers made a mistake that wound up costing them their three-peat chances — and Pendleton Heights was there to take advantage.

The Arabians won Saturday’s HHC girls competition at New Palestine, tallying 381.5 points, 23.5 points more than runner-up Yorktown.

Mt. Vernon was third with 291 points, with Delta (250), New Castle (249), Greenfield-Central (243.5), New Palestine (217) and Shelbyville (85) taking fourth through eighth.

At first glance, Yorktown had the team title sewn up following the 400 freestyle relay, the final race of the day. Pendleton won the event, but the Tigers took fifth, and the 28 points gained from that fifth-place finish would’ve been enough for a close triumph (386-381.5). But, Yorktown’s 400 free relay was disqualified, handing the title to the Arabians.

MV sophomore Haley Moore was the lone local winner, rallying to win the 100 freestyle. Moore clocked in at 59.02, just ahead of Delta’s Shannon Ellery (59.17) and Pendleton’s Katey Stout (59.74) in what Marauder coach Tom Shaver called “the comeback of the day.”

The Marauders also received strong performances from Maddie Powell (second in 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly), Gloria Gonzales (third in 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and the second-place 400 freestyle relay of Powell, Eve Gonzales, Moore and Gloria Gonzales.

“The girls swam better this year than they did last year at this meet,” said Shaver, in his second season coaching the MV girls. Shaver is also the longtime boys coach. “I still have some figuring out to do. I think we’re going in the right direction.”

G-C’s best finish came from freshman Kaylee Rumfelt, who took third in the diving competition. Rumfelt’s teammate, Shyanne Milne, was fourth. The duo finished behind a pair of seniors, Pendleton’s Taylor Fiew, who repeated as champion, and runner-up Megan Millikan of New Castle.

Emily Logan, the coach of the Cougars’ girls team, called her team’s diving performance “the biggest highlight of the day” and recalled how she recruited Milne into diving.

“Shyanne, I found her while I was teaching summer P.E. (physical education),” Logan said. “She’s a gymnast. She did a somersault with a half-twist and went right in (to the pool).”

NP’s top individual finisher was Erin Trimpe, who took third in the 100 breaststroke. The Dragons’ 200 medley relay team of Grace Hornsby, Trimpe, Addison Virt and Rachel Wineman was second.

“We can do better. The girls have a few weeks, the boys have a month. That’s what we’re swimming for,” NP assistant coach Steve Uppfalt said. “This was a good meet today, a good test for what we’re at.”

The red and white endured a rough start to Saturday before actual racing began when veteran coach Steve Maxwell fell off a ladder while hanging a banner. He suffered injuries to his ankle and elbow and did not coach Saturday. When reached Monday, Maxwell said he was awaiting the results of MRIs on his ankle and elbow.

The girls sectional meet is nearing, with prelims schedule for Thursday, Feb. 6 and finals slated for Feb. 8. Connersville is the defending team champion.

Notes: Yorktown’s Lauren Elston, Morgan Hicks and Katie Keller were quadruple winners. … New Castle competed Saturday even though the Trojans are not scheduled to be a full HHC member until the 2014-15 school year. New Castle was eligible for the team championship. … Mt. Vernon’s Samantha Case did not compete Saturday after breaking her elbow during a recent fall. She was one of MV’s top breaststrokers. … Yorktown’s Laura Slight was named Coach of the Year.
