The Greenfield-Central boys’ cross country team is coming off back-to-back semistate appearances and a 2011 campaign that featured four team wins, both of which were program firsts.
And yet, second-year coach Hunter White hasn’t been prompted to remind the team of the need for constant improvement. His group of runners have done that job for him, and the result is a deep collection of Cougars.
“More often than not, I find it’s the runners themselves who are first to identify gaps in the training program or other areas that could use a little work, and we take their suggestions very seriously,” White said. “Last year, we focused not only on honing performance of our top seven, but we recognized that depth was an area for us to work on.
“With that in mind, our veteran leaders really challenged the younger guys to push the envelope during summer conditioning and as a result, I feel that we’ve got better depth outside of the top seven.”
