Defending state champ Chad Red and teammate Brian Wagner earned wrestling championships for New Palestine on Saturday at the Evansville Mater Dei Holiday Classic.

Red, a sophomore and last year’s 106-pound state titlist, went 4-0 to win the 120-pound bracket at Mater Dei, while Wagner claimed the 195-pound crown. Wagner, a senior, finished third in the state finals at 182 last season.

Red improved to 21-0 this season while Wagner is 19-2. Red won his bouts by forfeit, two pins and a 12-0 decision over Mater Dei’s Alex Johnson in the championship.

Wagner had two pins, a 12-4 semifinal decision and an 8-0 shutout over Franklin’s Jake Brownfield in the final match. Brownfield was seeded first; Wagner, second.

Other top finishers for the Dragons in Evansville: Eugene Starks (113), Rylan McCarty (126) and Noah Grable (220) earned third-place finishes, and Alec White (106) was fourth.

Host and top-ranked Mater Dei won the 16-team event with 265.5 points, ahead of No. 4 Franklin (237.5), Union County (Ky.) (194), No. 11 New Palestine (181.5) and No. 13 Avon (154.5).

Locke wins Connersville title

Greenfield-Central finished sixth out of 32 teams at the Spartan Classic in Connersville.

Seven Cougars placed in the two-day event, led by 132-pound champ Sam Locke, who went 5-0.

Tyler Beeson (heavyweight, 5-1) and Taylor Wright (120, 6-1) finished third for G-C and Cameron Nuckols (182, 4-2) was fourth.

Locke improved to 20-1 on the year; Beeson is 21-1; Wright, 19-4; Nuckols, 16-6.

No. 7-ranked Cathedral won the tourney, followed by No. 12 Fort Wayne Carroll, East Noble, Valparaiso, Lebanon, G-C, Western, Roncalli and Connersville.

Royals, Marauders at Ben Davis

Eastern Hancock took seventh place in the 17-team Ben Davis Invite, while Mt. Vernon was 11th.

For the Royals, Jarrod Waterman (152) and Hunter Knopp (182) each went 4-1 in the tourney and placed third. Kenny Delph (195) finished fourth.

“We saw some really great wrestling and we’re looking forward to getting better for next week,” EH coach Keith Oliver said.

The Royals are at Knightstown for a three-way meet on Jan. 8 and at the Avon Super 6 on Jan. 11.

For Mt. Vernon, Colin McAtee (132) and Dustin Tackett (160) finished runner-up in their respective weight classes. Tatum Franklin (113) was third and Chance Ahlbrand (220) was fourth.

Host Ben Davis won the event with 507 points, ahead of Greensburg (472.5). EH had 319.5 points and Mt. Vernon collected 256.
