GREENFIELD — A woman who evaded prosecution after shooting her husband to death in late September has committed suicide, officials said.
Elizabeth Roberts, who prosecutors determined committed justifiable homicide when she shot her husband in their Greenfield home, was found dead Saturday, police said.
Roberts shot and killed her husband of more than 30 years, Gary Roberts, on Sept. 27 after the man made threats that he was going to shoot and kill law enforcement who were en route to the home. Gary Roberts had been acting erractically in recent weeks and had an arsenal of firearms, police said.
Roberts was held in police custody for a brief period as prosecutors worked to determine whether she should be charged or whether she reasonably acted in defense of others. Prosecutor Michael Griffin ultimately asked for the woman to be released with no charges filed.
Roberts had since moved out of the home in rural Greenfield where she had lived with her husband, police said.
She was found in her Greenfield apartment Friday by her attorney.
It is believed she died from an overdose, police said.
