COACHES: John Butler, 0-1 in 1st year at Northwest, 4-19 in 3rd year overall. Roger Dodson, 30-57 in 9th year at G-C, 94-116 in 22nd year overall.

SAGARIN RATINGS: G-C, 49, 194th overall, 40th in Class 4A. Northwest, 17.29, 311th overall, 63rd in Class 4A.

LAST WEEK: Ind. Northwest lost to Evansville Mater Dei, 61-0. Greenfield-Central defeated Ind. Shortridge, 48-18.

SERIES LAST 20 YEARS: No meetings.

NOTES: Sophomore RB/OL Michael Sosnowski suffered a stress fracture in his leg and will miss at least 4-to-6 weeks, according to Dodson. ... The coach said G-C is not overlooking the Space Pioneers, who have lost 28 of their last 31 games: “They’re  a skilled team that will have plenty of good athletes on the field. Their biggest weakness is they haven’t spent as much time together as other teams. Once they have, they’ll be a very tough team.”


Class A #11 Eastern Hancock (0-1) at South Decatur (1-0) 

GAME TIME: Friday, 7 p.m.

COACHES: Jim O’Hara, 0-1 in 1st year at E. Hancock, 87-49 in 13th year overall. Rod Martin, 20-31 in 6th year at SD.

SAGARIN RATINGS: Eastern Hancock, 66.89, 84th overall, 6th in Class 1A. SD, 44.64, 218th overall, 29th in Class 1A.

LAST WEEK: SD def. Cambridge City, 41-14. Northeastern def. EH  34-6.


LAST MEETING: EH, 50-6, Aug. 30, 2013.

NOTES: After 14 straight wins, the Royals have dropped 2 in a row: the Class A State Final and Friday’s Week 1 battle against NE. …. The Royals have defeated SD by a combined 131-21 the last 3 seasons, but they aren’t taking anyone lightly. “Absolutely not,” EH coach Jim O’Hara said. “We had a lot of guys Friday that never played before, especially on the line. It was a tough one. But, the great thing is, the kids got experience and learned the speed of the game and how intense it is.” … SD ran for 351 yards in a Week 1 win. Randall Canady led the Cougars’ wishbone offense with 136 yards on 10 carries.


Mt. Vernon (0-1) at Marion (1-0)

GAME TIME: Friday, 7 p.m.

COACHES: Doug Armstrong, 25-11 in 4th year at Mt. Vernon, 77-67 in 14th year overall. Ryan Vermilion, 2-9 in 2nd year at Marion.

SAGARIN RATINGS: Mt. Vernon, 50.65, 186th overall, 39th in Class 4A. Marion, 28.4, 283rd overall, 59th in Class 4A.

LAST WEEK: Mt. Vernon lost to Kokomo, 55-7. Marion defeated Madison-Grant, 25-22.

SERIES LAST 20 YEARS: Mt. Vernon, 3-0.

LAST MEETING: Mt. Vernon, 52-26, Aug. 30, 2013.

NOTES: Mt. Vernon QB/S Pete Werner is out with a broken fibula. Jimmy Campbell took over at QB last week after Werner went down in the 1st half. “Pete is going to be out for most of the regular season, which is really a shame,” MV coach Doug Armstrong said. “He wasn’t only our quarterback, he was a top defensive player, so we’re going to miss him.” ...  MV hasn’t started a season 0-2 since 2008. … Marion gained 250 rushing yards in Week 1. RB Will Collins led the way with 142 yards, including a 78-yard TD. ... Campbell is new to the QB spot. “This week, we’re going to try and keep it simple for him, and then progress a little bit each week,” Armstrong said.


4A #3 New Palestine (1-0) at 5A #17 Richmond (1-0)

GAME TIME: Friday, 7:30 pm.

COACHES: Kyle Ralph, 14-1 in 2nd year at New Palestine. Matt Holeva, 16-6 in 3rd year at Richmond, 77-29 in 11th year overall.

SAGARIN RATINGS: New Palestine, 92.55, 6th overall, 1st in Class 4A. Richmond, 51.1, 181st overall, 25th in Class 5A.

LAST WEEK: New Palestine defeated Danville, 61-0. Richmond defeated Connersville, 27-14.

SERIES LAST 20 YEARS: New Palestine, 3-0.

LAST MEETING: New Palestine, 46-2, Aug. 30, 2013.

NOTES: The Dragons are 4 wins away from No. 300 in program history. … Richmond’s Trey Sanders opened a Week 1 win vs. Connersville with an 88-yard kickoff TD return. ... The NP junior varsity beat Danville 50-6 Saturday, while the freshmen beat Lawrenceburg Monday. Both teams host Richmond this Saturday. ... New Pal’s DB/WR Garrett Kuhn (illness) and LB Gabe Estes are out for this week.
