Words of encouragement: Greenfield-Central Superintendent Linda Gellert, who has been a ReadUp volunteer tutor, was one of the celebrity readers at Friday's United Way kickoff. Gellert and others read the Dr. Suess story, ''Oh, the Places You'll Go.'' The event was designed in part to focus attention on United Way's literacy campaign. (Jim Mayfield/Daily Reporter)
GREENFIELD — They had brains in their heads and feet in their shoes, and they knew what they knew and did what they do.
United Way of Central Indiana kicked off its Hancock County campaign early Friday on the courthouse plaza with a public reading of the Dr. Seuss classic, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go,” led by celebrity readers. The event also tied in to United Way’s Read. Tutor. Mentor initiative and the local ReadUp program that mentors third-graders at Harris, J.B. Stephens and Weston elementary schools in Greenfield.
After reaching last year’s goal of $586,000, United Way has set an ambitious one for this year: The agency hopes to raise $632,000.
