Union County made quick work of Eastern Hancock Monday morning to advance to the Class 2A Sectional 41 championship at Centerville.

The No. 12-ranked Patriots (18-7) needed only five innings to beat the Royals 16-5. Union County was scheduled to meet Cambridge City Lincoln (13-14) in the title game Monday evening. Cambridge City beat Hagerstown in the second semifinal Monday afternoon.

The Royals’ season ended at 10-16. They entered the sectional on a five-game losing streak, but they defeated Knightstown 11-1 on Wednesday in the sectional opener.

Eastern Hancock’s loss extended the program’s sectional drought to 32 years. The Royals’ only baseball sectional championship was in 1976.

Part of the challenge this season for the Royals was pitching and defense.

With hitters such as Cody Wallace (.386) — who ranks among the state leaders in home runs with 10, Evan Fout (.385), Cole Fout (.369) and Hunter Brown (.365) — EH often scored plenty of runs. In three of their last four losses, the Royals scored at least five runs, but they gave up 43 runs in those contests.

Wallace, a junior, and Cole Faut, a freshman, will be among the key returnees next season, while Evan Fout and Brown will graduate.
