GREENFIELD — Facing one of East Central Indiana’s premier volleyball prospects of the last decade, Greenfield-Central’s task Saturday in the volleyball sectional championship was daunting.

When that Division I-bound foe got help from her teammates, G-C’s challenge became impossible.

Class 4A No. 1 New Castle beat the Cougars 25-12, 25-16, 25-19 to win the sectional title, led, as usual, by Lauryn Gillis.

Regarded as one of the top prep players in the nation, the Trojans’ junior outside hitter committed to the University of Southern California — currently the country’s No. 7-ranked team — Sept. 20.

The six-foot-2 Gillis did everything Saturday to live up to the billing. The current and future Trojan recorded 25 kills, most at an unstoppable warp speed.
