Unlike last November, there will be no four-game winning streak to begin the season for the Eastern Hancock girls basketball team.
The Royals were topped 48-39 by host Elwood Wednesday in the season opener for both squads.
EH jumped out to a 10-8 first quarter advantage and led 20-10 in the second stanza. Then, the Panthers embarked on a 15-0 run to go up 25-20 at halftime, and the Royals never recovered.
“We had a good start. We established our transition game and were playing well defensively,” said second-year EH coach Jeremy Powers. “For some reason, we got away from what we were doing.”
Kiersten Schrope (10 points, six rebounds, six steals), Lauren Harmon (six points, seven rebounds, three blocks), Kristin Eischen (six points, five rebounds) and Alora Marshall (four points, six rebounds, three blocks) paced EH.
The Royals turned the ball over 29 times — a total Powers termed “unacceptable” — and shot 26 percent from the field. They were also three of 10 from the foul line and committed 27 fouls.
“The reason why we got beat was more self-inflicted,” Powers explained. “Elwood is decent, but they’re not better than we are.”
EH is back in action for its home opener Saturday against Muncie South, a team it bested 60-44 last season.
Muncie South opens against Anderson Prep Academy today.
“If we come focused, if we come ready to play, we’ll be fine Saturday,” Powers added. “I told them it’s a marathon, not a sprint. We’ll be better.”
