Mt. Vernon’s Maddie Powell and New Palestine’s Erin Trimpe represented Hancock County Friday at the girls swimming State Finals at IUPUI.
Powell, a senior, competed in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly after winning both events at the New Palestine Sectional last weekend.
Friday, Powell swam the 200 IM in two minutes, 17.67 seconds to finish 30th. In the 100 butterfly, Powell took 35th, clocking in at 1:01.43 — ahead of her seed time (1:01.68).
Powell made her second trip to the state meet. She swam with the Marauders’ 200 medley relay in 2012. Powell was the sectional runner-up in the 100 butterfly in 2012 and 2013.
For Trimpe, after a comeback victory in the 100 breaststroke at sectional, she finished 32nd Friday in 1:14.27.
“She was out faster than she was in sectional, but she couldn’t keep her legs like we hoped,” NP coach Steve Maxwell said. “It’s a learning experience.”
The junior broke through after taking second in the 100 breaststroke at last winter’s sectional to her older sister, Emily. With a little work, Maxwell believes Trimpe can enjoy a strong senior season.
“I think what we’re going to do is get her legs a little stronger and also clean up her turns,” Maxwell said. “Her arms were great, her turnover was good and her extension was good. But she couldn’t keep her legs at the turnover rate that we needed.”
Elsewhere at the state meet, four new records were set, with another state mark tied. The championship finals of the swimming events are today, along with the diving portion of the competition. Carmel has won 27 straight state titles, tied for the second-longest state championship streak in the United States regardless of sport.
MV boys sweep tri-meet
A week ahead of the sectional meet, the Mt. Vernon boys swimming and diving team topped Cascade and International High School Thursday.
The Marauders finished with 146 points, ahead of Cascade (107) and International (34).
MV winners were Cole Case (200 freestyle), Matthew Bauchert (200 individual medley), Evan Schacherer (diving), Drew Scott (100 butterfly), Colin Harrison (100 backstroke) and Bryan Ahonen (100 breaststroke).
Mt. Vernon, Eastern Hancock, Greenfield-Central and host New Palestine will compete at the boys sectional meet Thursday (prelims) and next Saturday (finals).
