Twelve Hancock County athletes – nine girls and three boys – representing three schools will travel south to Indiana University’s Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex this weekend for the IHSAA’s annual Track and Field State Finals.
The girls get things started at 3 p.m. Friday with field event preliminaries, and the boys will take their turn Saturday at the same time. A top-nine finish is required for a state medal.
Here’s a recap of the local athletes’ seasons to date as well as a preview of what to expect this weekend when they line up against the Hoosier State’s best.
400 METER DASH
Local competitor: New Palestine junior Chris Poturalski is seeded 13th (49.84 seconds).
Poturalski notes: Finished second at the Connersville Regional in a personal-best time (49.84) to qualify for his first State Finals. … Placed third (50.55) at Warren Central Sectional. … Picked up blue ribbons at Hoosier Heritage Conference (51.07) and Hancock County (50.19) Meets. … Last Dragon to compete at state meet was Dillon Pike in 2012, who placed 14th in the 800. … Patrick Feeney timed in at 47.54 to set the NP school record in 2010.
Top seed: Tyvon Kelley, Fort Wayne North Side, 48.58.
Field notes: Kelley was seventh (49.93) last year. … All 27 runners are either juniors or seniors.
Local competitor: Greenfield-Central senior Tyler Beeson is seeded sixth (163 feet, 1 inch).
Beeson notes: Beeson placed second at the Connersville Regional (personal-best throw of 163-01) after claiming the Warren Central Sectional title with a heave of 156-05. … The fourth-year is also the Hoosier Heritage Conference (155-10) and Hancock County (141-9) champion. … Cory Rieskamp set G-C’s school record (173-0) at the 2007 Warren Central Sectional. … Beeson made the wrestling State Finals as a heavyweight this winter.
Top seed: Gelen Robinson, Lake Central, 185-01.
Field notes: Robinson was third (181-0) at the 2012 State Finals and placed second (200-04) last year. The senior is also the No. 5 seed in the shot put.
Local competitors: Greenfield-Central senior Tyler Beeson is seeded eighth (55 feet, six inches) and New Palestine senior Josh McKean is seeded 18th (54-01.5).
Beeson notes: Beeson barely missed the school record of 56-10 set by Brett Burkhart at the 1987 Hancock County Meet with a personal-best toss of 56-2.75 at the Cougar Chase Invitational on May 9. … Advanced to third straight State Finals by placing second (55-6) at Connersville Regional. … Claimed second career sectional title (55-10.75) at Warren Central. … Picked up blue ribbons at the Hoosier Heritage Conference (52-10) and Hancock County (55-9.5) competitions, his third straight title in the latter. … Took 17th (50-08) at last year’s state meet while battling a back injury after placing ninth (54-06.25) in the 2012 State Finals.
McKean notes: Placed fifth at the Connersville Regional with a school-record throw (54-1.5), but advanced to first state meet outside of the top-three requirement by having one of the better distances needed to round out the field of 27. … Second at sectional (51-11.25), HHC (50-11) and county (52-7.5) behind Beeson.
Top seed: David Schall, Avon, 59-04.
Field notes: Schall is also seeded third in the discus competition. … No. 2 seed Lukayus McNeil of Decatur Central (59-01) is the defending state champion, throwing 61-06 to win last year. … Beeson and McKean were all-HHC football selections as offensive linemen.
