FORTVILLE — The Mt. Vernon girls soccer team has swept the sectional field. Now the hard work begins.
The Marauders beat New Palestine 3-1 Wednesday in a regular season, Hoosier Heritage Conference tilt. The Dragons (1-7-1 overall, 0-2 HHC) and MV (5-1, 3-0) will rendezvous at Greenfield-Central in four weeks for the sectional, where the host Cougars (1-7) and Shelbyville (2-3) fill out the four-team field.
MV has wins over Greenfield-Central, 1-0, and Shelbyville, 10-0, already this season.
“We’re going to be different teams by the time we get around to sectionals,” MV coach Casey Dodd said. “It’s nice we picked up wins against every one of the teams, but every one of the teams is going to get a little bit better. Hopefully we do, too.
“So, I don’t want to start putting rankings on it.”
The sectional favorites took a 2-0 lead over the Dragons on goals by Chelsea Thomas and Blaire Viehweg in the 13th and 17th minutes, respectively.
For Viehweg, it was her fifth goal of the season, equaling Claudia Brown for the team and county lead.
In the second half, Lauren Bradburn notched her first goal of the year to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage eight minutes into the action. And Natalie Kehrt put New Palestine on the board in minute 73 of the match.
It was only the second goal of the season scored against the Marauders and keeper Olivia Coleman, who made eight saves Wednesday.
